Liow tells Soi Lek to quit

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 — MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek should resign to speed up the party's election process, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Liow said Dr Chua's resignation would influence his (Dr Chua's) supporters to do likewise.

"He must not only talk but do what he says so that other people in the central committee (CC) will follow suit," Liow (picture) told reporters after accompanying the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who visited a heart transplant patient, Tan Geek Koon at the National Heart Institute here yesterday.

Liow was commenting on Dr Chua's remarks that more CC members were expected to resign after the Chinese New Year celebration next month to pave the way for fresh party elections.

Under the party's constitution, a fresh poll must be held within 30 days if 21 of the 31 elected central committee members resigned.

However, so far only 13 elected CC members, including Liow, had signed undated resignation letters.

"As Dr Chua had promised to resign, he should do it first. So too party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, who had also made the promise," said Liow. — Bernama
